Lindsay Lerner Artist statement Media studies 4 Over the collage process, my philosophy changed multiple times but my original philosophe kept an idea of “never forgot ones past but always strive for your future and accomplish what those before you couldn’t.” The idea of time and worldly accomplishments are transformed in my collage into a more important part of my personal philosophies was increased over the course of creating my art. With in my project each element symbolizes a different thing that ties into my personal beliefs. These are explained in the fallowing list. • In the top left corner there is the words “Fall (heart) in” and “love” vertically across the bottom. My reasoning for the heart is so it makes the viewer read it as well as see it artistically. The reason love is vertically placed under it is so its visually appeasing as well as it can make the idea more definite and dominate in the piece. As I original mentioned in my philosophies contains the idea of being a positive person. The ideas of a “positive person” tie directly into love such is why I found it nesscerry to include here. • Below that you will find a females hand flashing a peace sign this is suppose to carried across the idea of learning from the mistakes of those before and striving for a better future. Peace is something the world has yet to see in its complete form but it is something to strive for in the future. • Overlapping the hand is a black and white photo taken at occupies Wall Street. This ties into my idea because it’s a current event that one-day a future generation will learn from. The members of this protest are striving for a better future and for what they believe in. • Below that n the bottom left corner is a multy colored pattern in shades of blue and green. This added a decorative edge as well as to me it resembled a topographic map and geographies played a huge roll in the lives of those before. It also will play a roll in our futures and the future generations. • To the right of it is a crossword puzzle. I personally love puzzles they are mini mysteries and because life. Life has many unsolved mysteries which I felt like it was relevant to my collage and philosophies. • Then there are to strips one in green and one in a variety of colors to the right both those are suppose to symbolize never times endlessness and growth. Personal and humanity's growth are important to continue positive contributions to society. • In between those lines at the end is the words “We Are Young” these words are not only a reminder that we are young we will make mistakes and learn from them but they also are a reminder the past. • On the left there is a haft of clock pointed to 12. 12 am is the beginning off a new day and every new day is a new opportunity to do something positive for others, yourself and to strive for what lies ahead. • To the right and above the clock there are the words new and York. New York is not only where I am from but it’s where my dad grow up and where his parents are buried. It is sort of a central base and here like anywhere else I can learn from my past and the past of my family in order to not make history repeat itself. I learnt that like my grandmother and my great grandmother that women can be extremely strong on there own and it is the lessons like this that allow me to be positive about any situation. • Above that the letters that form the world Time are separated but spell out time in the correct order. Time is the holder of the past and the future it. It is a healer and an enemy for some but it really fits into my philosophe and is a base for almost everything. • To the left of that is a man shooting a gun from a chair. This is included in this piece because it’s an antagonist it is almost a cause for a positive attitude. Without the bad there would be no good. He is a reason for the need of a positive attitude. So one does not become like him. • The mans gun is pointing to a clock he is “Killing Time.” The idea of “killing time” occurred to me in the sense that some waste it. They simply don’t take life as a gift. They say “oh, I’ll do something good tomorrow<” but tomorrow might not come. Don’t kill time don’t waste a second • To the left of the man are lips with ruby red lipstick. This was meant to tie into the idea of love and positive things such as the smile lips make. • Above this is a hand holding a iPhone, I was apprehensive about this but then I realized that 120 years a go the idea of a phone was non existent. Technology increases each year and now the past can simply be forgotten and looked over because problems then aren’t problems now. For example then surgery almost always resulted in death and there ideas about the anatomy were no conclusive and now technology is replacing doctors jobs. • To the left of that is a heart with a picture of a cute couple and one yellow and blue hearts. These are meant to symbolize love and happiness and that through respect true love is gains. • To the left of that is the word “our,” Our can mean a number of things but mainly it was men tot go with there word time. It is our time to shine and to be the positive change that effects the world • To the left of that there is a car on a road. The road is one sided it is missing allow line this is meant to sybolize that your path is your own and that you shouldn’t allow others to change that. Don’t let others make you make a “ U turn” • Above that is a blue car. The reason that is included is because driving in a car can be in the future or the present or the past all at once. For example you can be driving down the road (present), turn and everything you have done in the last few minutes is the past, but the road ahead is the future. • The movement of the collage is random, I did this because life is random you set your own path with your decisions therefor I made the movement so your eyes see what they want to reflect. • The use of some white area is on purpose. This is suppose to symbolize the “the road not traveled” The future in a way beacuse it is unwritten and through your careful decisions now it could produce more guns or more love and piece. It is up to the viewer to determine what should be here. • The Collage also uses a combination of whole images and created images, this is because “you cant expect a perfect future” you cant expect a whole future” some is already created and some is for you to create, To conclude my collage took me on a personal journey and ever decision I made was meant to further my philosophical idea as well as communicate metaphors such as “killing time.” It was not meant to be something that is full because personally my life is yet to be completed. “ Never forget our, past but always strive for the future and accomplish hat those before couldn’t” and “positive attitudes in the past present and future” is meant to be communicated in a way that allows your mind to grasp the concepts but allow your mind to add your own ideas or see your own philosophes with in mine.
