I think that family is one of the most significant parts of life. Whether it’s your biological family or just a group of people close to you that you consider to be family, they are there to give you a sense of support, friendship, love, and everything in between. When you loose someone in your family, it is like a leg being removed from a chair. At first, all you want to do is collapse onto the floor, but after a while, you learn to balance the chair, and life continues. I will never forget my dad and what a great man he was. I consider myself to be an extension of him, like he still lives through me, experiencing new things as I do. Though he is not physically here anymore, he is with my family and me mentally. I chose to do my “self” portrait in a way that shows that my father is a part of me. I wore his sweater, his pants, and his watch to try to replicate one of my favorite pictures of him. The painting behind us is by Richard Serra. It is number 6/45 in his 2006 “Between the Torus and the Sphere” series. In ‘06, my dad and I flew to California together to pick up this painting from Serra’s print shop. It is hanging on a wall in my house, as a constant reminder of the great times we had together, as a family.
