"And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be."

Artist statement
For my portrait I chose a picture of myself that was happy yet dark to symbolized that even if you may not show it, people who look happy on the outside can feel sad inside. There are times when I don’t want my outside to be a true reflection of how I’m feeling inside, although sometimes it does.

I chose this setting because it is a part of my life and a peaceful place. The darkness is what I feel sometimes but on the outside I smile because I know it won’t break me. The leaves on the tree represent “the outside” they hold on, still alive. The leaves on the ground around me represent “the inside” they are crumpled on the cold ground, helpless. In the corner of my picture, hanging from the tree is a white candle in a hurricane lamp. A white candle represents happiness, protection, spirituality, peace, relaxation, and higher self.
