2012 Media Studies vocabulary

Evolutionary biology ——relating to the way in which plants and animals develop and change gradually over a long period of time
Assumptions ——something that you think is true although you have no definite proof
Empathy ——the ability to understand other people's feelings and problems
Mirror neurons ——A mirror neuron is a neuron that fires both when an animal acts and when the animal observes the same action performed by another
Frustration ——the feeling of being annoyed, upset, or impatient, because you cannot control or change a situation, or achieve something:
 Utilitarianism ——the political belief that an action is good if it helps the largest number of people
Utopia ——an imaginary perfect world where everyone is happy
Biosphere ——technical the part of the world in which animals, plants etc can live
Theological ——a college for training people to become priests or church ministers
Consciousness ——the condition of being awake and able to understand what is happening around you:

Nation ——a country, considered especially in relation to its people and its social or economic structure:
Industrial revolution ——The Industrial Revolution was a period from 1750 to 1850 where changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation, and technology had a profound effect on the social, economic and cultural conditions of the times
Technology ——new machines, equipment, and ways of doing things that are based on modern knowledge about science and computers:
Viscerally——relating to the viscera
Theological——a college for training people to become priests or church ministers
Conscience ——the part of your mind that tells you whether what you are doing is morally right or wrong
Ideological ——based on strong beliefs or ideas, especially political or economic ideas
Psychological——relating to the way that your mind works and the way that this affects your behaviour:
Dramaturgical——very dramaic
Narrative ——a description of events in a story, especially in a novel
Narcissism ——when someone is too concerned about their appearance or abilities or spends too much time admiring them - used to show disapproval
Violent ——involving actions that are intended to injure or kill people, by hitting them, shooting them etc
Non-liner ——a large ship for passengers
Liner ——a piece of material used inside something, especially in order to keep it clean
Abstract ——based on general ideas or principles rather than specific examples or real events
Angle——the space between two straight lines or surfaces that join each other, measured in degrees
Ethereal——very delicate and light, in a way that does not seem real:
Archetype——a perfect example of something, because it has all the most important qualities of things that belong to that type
Hero——a man who is admired for doing something extremely brave
Aperture——formal a small hole or space in something
Negative——harmful, unpleasant, or not wanted
Positive ——if you are positive about things, you are hopeful and confident, and think about what is good in a situation rather than what is bad
Critique——a detailed explanation of the problems of something such as a set of political ideas

 Translucent——not transparent, but clear enough to allow light to pass through:
Composition  ——the way in which something is made up of different parts, things, or members
Documentary——a film or television or a radio programme that gives detailed information about a particular subject
Conceptual——dealing with ideas, or based on them:
Fantasy——an exciting and unusual experience or situation you imagine happening to you, but which will probably never happen:
Emotions——a strong human feeling such as love, hate, or anger
Layer——an amount or piece of a material or substance that covers a surface or that is between two other things
Feeling ——showing strong feelings
Depth  of field    ——In optics, particularly as it relates to film and photography, depth of field (DOF) is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image.
Contrast ——a difference between people, ideas, situations, things etc that are being compared:
Symbol ——a picture or shape that has a particular meaning or represents a particular organization or idea
Symbolic ——important but not having any real effect
